7 2014-07-01 · Yet, this study considerably extends our knowledge about occipital, occipito-temporal and occipito-parietal infarction through detailed descriptions of infarct topography, neurological, neuropsychological symptoms, and importantly, the definition of anatomical correlates of neuropsychological dysfunction by using a lesion-symptom mapping approach. The concept of apraxia was shaped by Hugo Liepmann about a hundred years ago. Apraxia is predominantly a symptom of left brain damage, but some symptoms of apraxia can also occur after right brain damage. A 42-year-old woman, a diagnosed case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), developed severe headache followed by left hemiparesis and cortical blindness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain demonstrated right parieto-occipital infarct and the patient was initiated on high-dose steroids and antiplatelet agents with which the patient had clinical and radiological deterioration. The occipital branches of the posterior cerebral artery were examined in 31 human brains. The authors determined the origin, course, and region of supply of each occipital branch: the parieto-occipital, calcarine, posterior temporal, and common temporal arteries, as well as the lingual gyrus artery.
